When Billy Barker struck it rich in Barkerville 1862, the
Cariboo Gold Rush was on. Miners flooded into British Columbia
and headed north to strick it rich like Billy. Before finding
gold, the miners first had to find their way to Barkerville.
This was not an easy task. 650 kilometres of thick forest,
raging rivers, and deadly cliffs stood between them and
the wild boomtown of Barkerville.
Governor James Douglas wanted to help the miners get to
Barkerville, so he hired men to build the Cariboo Wagon
Road. The road streched from Yale to Barkerville. Even with
the Cariboo Wagon Raod to follow, many miners lost their
lives or gave up before getting to Barkerville. Most of
the men who actually made it all of the way to Barkerville
were shocked and dismayed to discover that striking it rich
was a lot harder than it looked.
In this webquest, you play the Cariboo Gold Rush Game.
During the game, you will pretend that you a miner who is
going to Barkerville during the Cariboo Gold Rush. Through
the game, you will learn about the incredibly difficult
journey that miners faced when they headed for Barkerville.
